"Weekend" has been referred to as “the most personal song on the album” in interviews. In the song, the weekend appears to symbolize Payne embracing his recklessness which is, ironically, the time when he feels most alive.
“It kind of outlines my struggle with mental health and different things that I had (experienced) living my life the way I used to,” he said, adding that the real-life events that inspired the song are “probably something I’ll never talk about fully.”
In the past, Payne has spoken about his struggles with bouts of alcohol dependency as a coping mechanism. The lyrics can be interpreted as a glimpse into what his mindset was like during one of the dark, self-destructive times in his life.
When speaking to Billboard in December 2019, Payne stated:
