Barry Kilpatrick Is Professor Of Trombone/Euphonium At SUNY Fredonia Where He Has Been A Member Of The Faculty Since 1979. As Assistant Director Of The School Of Music He Coordinates The Music Admission Process. He Also Serves As Chair Of The Performance Department. Principal Trombonist Of The Erie Philharmonic Orchestra From 1987-2008 And Of The Western New York Chamber Orchestra Since 1981 Kilpatrick Has Toured Jamaica And New Zealand With The Fredonia Faculty Brass. He Has Performed And Toured As A Member Of The Trombone And Euphonium Sections With Keith Brion’s “New Sousa Band.” Kilpatrick Earned Degrees In Performance At The University Of Wisconsin-Madison In The 1970s Where He Became Acquainted With Composers Who Heard Him Play Euphonium. He Played The First Performances Of Alec Wilder’s Euphonium Concerto In 1971 And Hilmar Luckhardt’s Octet For Euphonium And Brass In 1977. Later After Arriving At SUNY Fredonia Walter Hartley And John Davison Also Composed For Kilpatrick. These Works Became The Centerpieces Of His Recording American Music For Euphonium Mark Records Of Which One Critic Wrote “Kilpatrick...Plays With A Beautiful Tone Expressive Phrasing And Sure Solid Technique. This Is An Essential Disc.” In 1989 Kilpatrick Was Invited To Become A Music Critic For American Record Guide An Internationally Distributed Magazine That Has Since Published Well Over 1000 Of His Reviews Of Classical Recordings. From 1991-2008 He Devoted His Summers To The Pennsylvania Governor's School For The Arts Teaching Low Brass And Chairing The Music Department.
